Barry Chess, the author of Talaro’s Foundations in Microbiology 11th Edition, has a background in research related to the development of muscle and bone. He has been teaching microbiology at Pasadena City College for over two decades, where he has also taught biology to majors and non-majors, developed a course in human genetics, and helped to establish a biotechnology program. His interests in innovative teaching methods have led him to contribute to the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science and the book Science Stories You Can Count On: 51 Case Studies with Quantitative Reasoning in Biology. He has also presented papers and talks on the effective use of case studies and digital tools in the classroom and served as a scientific advisor for the American Film Institute.
